Super Blood Wolf Moon

Oh - I hate that marketing name, but it was a wonderful lunar eclipse last night. Here are a few images.

Oddly, my favorite image was before totality. The soft orange glow in contrast to the sliver of white.

Merry Christmas from the Bartlett's

I hope you and your family are having a great holiday season. For my family, that holiday is Christmas and this is our first try at a family photo including the pets. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Merry Christmas!

…and here are a few others and BTS.

First Snow - Looking for Birds

With a couple inches of snow, the hope was to find a local barred owl and photograph it in the snow. Not luck with the owl, but I did find several friendly kinglet and woodpeckers.

Golden Crowned Kinglet

The Golden Crowned Kinglet might look relaxed in the photos, but I don’t think I know a more caffeinated bird - jumping from branch to branch endlessly looking for something to eat.

Pileated Woodpecker (male)

A pair were eating at the same tree, but the male was apparently feeling more photogenic.

Bands of America - Grand Nationals

Last weekend I had the pleasure to photograph the Bellbrook High School Marching Eagles at BOA Grand National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. Although the Eagles didn’t progress past preliminaries, they put on their best show of the year - leaving their hearts and souls on the field. Here are a few of my favorite images.

Missing in Action

This Fall it has proven difficult to get out and shoot. Today I was able to venture out and visit the Savannah National Wildlife Refugee - in particular the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive (apparently the visotr’s center is closed on Sundays.)

The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is a 31,551 acre National Wildlife Refuge located in Chatham and Effingham counties in Georgia and Jasper County in South Carolina

Thank You Janice!

A special shout out to Janice Sullivan for having me on her Macro Photography Live Chat! Janice has put together a great forum for close-up, macro, and micro-photographers. Monthly she hosts an artist, and focuses on their work, process, gear and motivation.

Iridescence Emerald Euphoria

I saved this monster from our swimming pool, an Emerald Euphoria. I love the coloring and iridescence. Euphoria fulgida, the emerald euphorium, is a species of scarab beetle in the family Scarabaeidae. Adults measure between 13.4 - 19.8mm.

Thanks to Moose Peterson, Tony and Chelsea for the nice review of my Ruby-throated Hummingbird photo (yes - its a female Ruby-throated.)

Born on the Fifth of July

Welcome to Penny - our future puppy. Penny, her brother and sister were born early in the morning on the fifth of July. Proud mommy Luna and father Dez welcomed their first liter - a healthy three pups.

Making Lemonaide

We've been traveling the last couple weeks. When coming home, I was greeted by beautiful weed. So, what do I do - photograph it.

Hummingbird at the New House

Very glad that we have ruby-throated hummingbirds at the new house. We have a regular female and have occasionally spotted a male

Dusting Off the Macro Gear

I'm excited  - it's that time of year. The wildflowers are starting to bloom and the bugs are out in full force. This morning I visited Bellbrook | Sugarcreek Park District's newest park - Morris Reserve.

Third Night's a Charm

A little experiment tonight - I put the 2.0x Tamron teleconvertor on the back of the 600mm lens for 1200mm of focal length on the DX-format, Nikon D500. Focusing is a bit more challenging, but the result was notably better than the 600mm version. I've tried this experiment a number of times on different camera bodies - this is by far the best result I've had with the 2.0x on.

First Visit to Magee Marsh

Yesterday marked my first visit to Magee Marsh for spring migration and WOW! The day was hampered by some heavy rains, but that brought the insects and the birds down low. My trip was cut short a day by camera issues, but I added nine new species to my count and some great, up-close bird experiences.

Never did get the shot of the Canada Warbler I wanted - whether it was poor lighting or the camera started acting up. They look good small, but not blown up.

Other finds, but limited photo opportunities included the Wilson's Warbler, Bay-Breasted Warblers, Nashville Warbler, Lincoln Sparrow and a lost Black-Throated Gray Warbler from out west.

Dance Dimension - 2018 Recital

Today marked my 16th year enjoying the Dance Dimension Spring Recital. We love Miss Lois, Miss Tootie, Miss Andrea and all the wonderful teachers. When the scheduled photographer was double booked, I stepped up to capture the show. Check out the two galleries below - click to enlarge the images, and swipe right or left to scroll (or arrow keys on your computer.) For 5x7 or 8x10 prints - please send me a note and contact information on my Contact Page.
